Over the years

Through the crop year

Each crop year runs from August 1 and is measured from its own August, so years at different price levels line up. The dashed line is the middle of the last ten crop years at each point, and half of those years fell inside the shaded range. A record of past years, not a forecast.

Other provinces: Saskatchewan · Manitoba · Ontario

What these prices are

Statistics Canada publishes the average price farmers in each province received for each crop, every month (table 32-10-0077-01, Farm product prices, crops and livestock). It runs a few months behind, so it shows where prices have been, not this week's.

They're a record of where prices have been, not advice on when to sell. Your own buyer's bid is the number to sell on.

Your own sales on this line

GrainPosition draws this chart with each of your sales on it: fixed-price contracts on their contract date, sales with no contract on their settlement date, each against the price that month, and your break-even. You see what you got against the market, in dollars. Free during early access.

Questions

Where do these Alberta grain prices come from?

Statistics Canada publishes the average price farmers in each province received for each crop, every month (table 32-10-0077-01, Farm product prices, crops and livestock). It runs a few months behind, so it shows where prices have been, not this week's.

Is this what my elevator will pay?

No. It's a provincial average for one grade of each crop. Your own buyer's bid depends on the company, the delivery point, freight, the grade you deliver and the day. Use this to see where the market has been; your elevator's bid is the number to sell on.

How often is it updated?

Monthly, a few months behind. A new month shows here the day Statistics Canada publishes it.

Can I see my own sales against these prices?

Yes. In GrainPosition, the Prices tab draws this line with each of your sales on it: fixed-price contracts on their contract date and sales with no contract on their settlement date, each against the price that month, with your break-even. Free during early access.

Were you paid right on your last grain settlement?

Send me a photo of the settlement, and the contract if you have it. Within a day I’ll email you back what each line is, what’s worth asking the buyer about, and any grade or payment deadline that’s still open. Free, no account.

Email me a photo of it

Send only what you’re comfortable with. I read it myself, with GrainPosition’s photo reader (Anthropic’s Claude), use it only to check your settlement, and delete it after I reply unless you ask me to set up your book. I’ll reply from hello@grainposition.com and send nothing else unless you ask. Privacy
