What these prices are

Saskatchewan and Manitoba each publish a weekly price for the main crops: Saskatchewan's average for one grade of each crop, and Manitoba's farmer net cash return at a Winnipeg elevator. For every province, Statistics Canada publishes the average price farmers there received each month, a few months behind. None of them is a bid near you: your own buyer's price depends on the company, the delivery point, freight, grade and the day.

They're a record of where prices have been, not advice on when to sell.

Your own sales against these prices

GrainPosition draws your province's price with each of your sales on it, against your break-even, and checks every settlement against its contract and scale tickets. Free during early access.

Questions

Where do these grain prices come from?

Saskatchewan's weekly average prices come from the Government of Saskatchewan's Dashboard, Manitoba's weekly farmer net cash return at a Winnipeg elevator from Manitoba Agriculture's Grain and Oilseed Prices report, and the monthly averages for Alberta and Ontario from Statistics Canada's farm product prices.

Why weekly in Saskatchewan and Manitoba but monthly elsewhere?

Those two provinces publish their own weekly prices. For the others, the open source is Statistics Canada's monthly average of what farmers received, which comes out a few months behind.

Is this what my elevator will pay?

No. Each is a provincial figure for one grade of each crop. Your buyer's bid depends on the company, the delivery point, freight, the grade you deliver and the day; it's the number to sell on.

Were you paid right on your last grain settlement?

Send me a photo of the settlement, and the contract if you have it. Within a day I’ll email you back what each line is, what’s worth asking the buyer about, and any grade or payment deadline that’s still open. Free, no account.

Email me a photo of it

Send only what you’re comfortable with. I read it myself, with GrainPosition’s photo reader (Anthropic’s Claude), use it only to check your settlement, and delete it after I reply unless you ask me to set up your book. I’ll reply from hello@grainposition.com and send nothing else unless you ask. Privacy
