Harvest Profit alternative: GrainPosition and Harvest Profit, compared honestly

Both keep a grain book: contracts, bins, loads and settlements. Harvest Profit is farm finance software built around profit field by field, with the grain book inside it. GrainPosition is only the grain book, and checks each settlement against its contract. Here is what each does, what each costs, and who owns them, including where Harvest Profit is the better choice.

Written by the person building GrainPosition, so read it knowing that. Harvest Profit's details checked against its own pages on 3 October 2026; sources at the bottom.

Choose Harvest Profit if

You want to run the business side of the farm in one place: profit and loss by field and below it, equipment costs, crop insurance scenarios, landlord shares and several entities. You already use John Deere Operations Center or a Libra CART grain cart scale and want that data to flow in. You grow mainly corn, soybeans or US wheat and want revenue to move with live futures. Or your harvest crew needs a driver app that logs loads with no signal. Those are real strengths, and GrainPosition doesn't have them.

Look at GrainPosition if

You want the grain book and not the rest: every contract, bin and load, how much is sold and at what average, and whether each settlement paid what the contract said, set up in an evening. You grow canola, peas, lentils or other crops without a futures feed in Harvest Profit, and want to value them at your own bids. You want contracts and settlements read from a photo as well as tickets. Or you'd rather pay a few hundred Canadian dollars than $1,600 US.

On ownership, facts rather than insinuation: Harvest Profit has been part of John Deere since 2020. In Canada its contracting company is John Deere Canada ULC, and its terms say the company, its affiliates and related entities may use data about the service, including customer data and data derived from it, as set out in its privacy notice. Whether that matters is your call. GrainPosition's position is written on its front page: your prices are not aggregated, sold or shared, and there is no second business model.

Moving over from Harvest Profit or another app

If you can export your contracts to a spreadsheet or CSV, import that file into GrainPosition and the columns are matched for you; you check every row before anything is saved. Or send me the export and I’ll set up your book for you. I haven’t tested Harvest Profit’s export, so if it doesn’t come across cleanly, that’s on me to fix, not on you to retype.

Other options worth knowing

Combyne, owned by Bayer, is the closest to GrainPosition in scope, with an app from the app store and connections to FieldView (GrainPosition and Combyne compared). Traction is farm accounting software whose top tier adds grain contracts and settlement matching. And a well-kept spreadsheet is still a reasonable answer for a small book: there is a free one.

All of them side by side, with Bushel Farm and GrainFox too: grain marketing software compared.

Keeping this in a notebook, a spreadsheet or another app?

I’m setting up the books of the first 30 farms myself. I’ll import your spreadsheet, an export from the app you use now, or photos of your contracts, and set up your book in GrainPosition, so you can try it on your own numbers. Nothing is charged today, and nothing starts without your yes. See how it works in two minutes.

I’ll reply myself from hello@grainposition.com about setting up your book, and send nothing else unless you ask. Privacy
