Acre counter
Set your swath width, press Start and drive. Your phone’s GPS adds up the acres you cover, pass by pass. Free in the browser, nothing to install.

Press Start when you’re at the edge of the field.
Save as field work on one of your fields: the acres go in its work log with today’s date.
Keep the acres on your fields, with what was done and when, in a free GrainPosition book.
Keep the screen on and this page open. The counter keeps your phone’s screen awake while it’s counting. A web page can’t count with the screen locked, during a call or in another app: when you come back it carries on from where you are, and the stretch in between isn’t counted.
How it counts
Acres covered are the distance driven times the swath width: 1 mile at 36 feet is 4.36 acres, and 1 km at 11 metres is 1.1 hectares. It counts only the readings your phone’s GPS is sure of to within 25 metres, and nothing while you’re stopped, so sitting at the end of a pass doesn’t add acres.
- Overlap counts twice. It doesn’t map where you’ve already been: headlands and overlapping passes add up again. Pause it for headlands you don’t want counted.
- Use the width you really cover. A 36-foot header seldom cuts a full 36 feet; set what you actually take in, so the acres come out right.
- A phone’s GPS is good to a few metres. Over a long field that evens out; on short passes the count is rougher.
To get the area of a whole field from its edge instead, measure it on its satellite map in your field from space.
Every field’s work, kept
In a free GrainPosition book, the acres you count go in the field’s work log with the job and the date, beside its crop, its costs and its harvest. Anyone on the farm can log work, a hired hand included, without seeing the money.
