Grain marketing software, compared.

Most grain farms don’t use any of these apps. They use a spreadsheet, a notebook, or each elevator’s own website. So this comparison starts there, and then puts six apps side by side, GrainPosition included.

Written by the person building GrainPosition, so read it knowing that. Every claim about another product comes from its own website, linked under each one. Where something couldn’t be confirmed there, the table says “not stated” rather than guess.

$199 to $3,950a year for the paid plans listed here. Most farms pay nothing, because they use a spreadsheet.
1 of 6apps here tells you when to sell. If you want advice, that matters. If you don’t, it matters too.
2 of 6belong to the biggest names in farming: Combyne to Bayer, Harvest Profit to John Deere.

Each one, in a paragraph

GrainPosition

Independent, built in Winnipeg · free in early access, then $249 CAD a year for founding farms

Good at: the grain book and nothing else. What’s in each bin, every contract, the loads hauled and each settlement split into where the money went: grade, dockage and each deduction. A photo of a contract, ticket or settlement fills the form in, and a buyer’s offer can be checked against the book before you answer.

Worth knowing: your prices are not aggregated, sold or shared, and there is no second business model. It doesn’t tell you when to sell.

A spreadsheet, or a notebook

Free · already yours

Good at: exactly what you built it for. For a few contracts with one or two buyers, it’s a perfectly good answer, and there’s a free grain contract spreadsheet here with the weighted average done right.

Worth knowing: it’s only as right as its last formula, nobody checks settlements in it, and it’s hard work on a phone in the truck.

Each buyer’s website

Free · myBunge (formerly myViterra), Richardson Pioneer, CargillAg and others

Good at: your contracts, scale tickets and settlements with that one buyer, entered by the buyer, often within minutes of the truck crossing the scale.

Worth knowing: each one only shows its own grain. Sell to three buyers and you have three logins and no total: no average across them, no bins, and nobody checking their settlement but you.

Combyne

Bayer CropScience, since the end of 2022 · $499.99 a year or $49.99 a month · 30-day trial

Good at: a mature, Canadian-built grain marketing app. Contracts, tickets and settlements read from a photo or PDF, or emailed in by your buyer. Bins by yard, grain bags and elevator storage. Crop years side by side, and a separate product so your marketing advisor can work in it with you.

Worth knowing: its data policy says “Combyne does not sell your data” and that you own what you put in. It describes itself as a division of Bayer CropScience Inc. Settlements are compared on price and total discounts rather than split deduction by deduction.

Bushel Farm

Bushel Inc., independent, Fargo, North Dakota · $199 or $599 a year · 30 days free

Good at: contracts that arrive by themselves. If your elevators run on Bushel, more than 3,500 locations in the US and Canada, contracts flow in from their own systems with nothing to type. It also tracks hedges, futures and options against your position.

Worth knowing: its help centre says it “only supports USD at this time”, so contracts in Canadian dollars don’t come in automatically. It says it doesn’t sell your data, and keeps the right to use anonymized data.

Harvest Profit

John Deere, since 2020 · $1,600 USD a year · 14-day trial

Good at: profit, field by field, live against CBOT futures, tied to John Deere Operations Center. A driver app for loads and ticket photos that works offline, grain cart scales, landlord shares and several entities. It’s farm finance software with a grain book inside, more than a grain book.

Worth knowing: it’s priced in US dollars, and its futures feeds cover corn, soybeans and US wheats, with no canola listed. In Canada you sign with John Deere Canada, and its terms let the company and its affiliates use customer data and data derived from it.

GrainFox

FarmLink Marketing Solutions, Winnipeg · free basic plan, $1,500 or $3,000 CAD a year · 14-day trial

Good at: telling you what the market is doing and what to do about it. Twenty years of Canadian grain market analysis, expert reports, AI sell or hold signals and, on the top plan, a human advisor. Links with AgExpert and Farm at Hand, which many Canadian farms already use.

Worth knowing: it’s an advice service first and a record book second. It says “your data stays yours”; its privacy policy lets it use aggregated data that no longer identifies your farm.

Traction

Traction Ag, independent, owned by farm investors, Indiana · $950 to $3,950 a year · grain contracts on Enterprise

Good at: the books. Farm accounting, payroll, several entities, land agreements and profit per field and per bushel. It bought Granular Business and Conservis; its Enterprise tier, for large operations, adds grain contracts, positions and settlement matching.

Worth knowing: it’s built around US tax forms, and the grain contract tier is priced on request. By default it anonymizes and aggregates farm data for benchmarking, and you can turn that off.

Where GrainPosition falls short

Fair is fair. Today, GrainPosition:

  • is new, in free early access, with no track record yet
  • has no app in the app store; it runs in your phone’s browser
  • doesn’t connect to other farm software or to buyers’ systems; it exports everything as CSV
  • doesn’t show crop years side by side yet, or track futures and basis
  • doesn’t tell you when to sell, and won’t

See it on a sample farm first

The demo runs in your browser on a sample Manitoba or Iowa farm. No account, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Keeping this in a notebook, a spreadsheet or another app?

I’ll import your spreadsheet, an export from the app you use now, or photos of your contracts, and set up your book in GrainPosition for you, so you can try it on your own numbers. Nothing is charged today, and nothing starts without your yes. See how it works in two minutes.

I’ll reply myself from hello@grainposition.com about setting up your book, and send nothing else unless you ask. Privacy
